Co-designing novel tool

As part of our dissemination and communication activities in EURCAWs Work Programme 2025-2027, we are constantly evaluating the effectiveness of our output. Recent discussions with inspectors regarding the indicator factsheets format and content lead us to maintain the current factsheet series, and at the same time the content will gradually be transferred to a novel ‘welfare inspection support tool’. This could be a smartphone application, but the need for format and content remains to be further explored. This year we started started discussions with inspectors to find out more about their needs and insights regarding the features of such a tool.

We started with a short and basic survey among the EU Member States in November. In total 103 respondents filled in the survey, representing 13 Member States.

Workshop

In the follow-up workshop of today, the findings of the survey were shared, and the co-design process continued by focussing on three key elements:

The primary purposes for using the inspection tool.
The types of content official inspectors expect to access through the tool.
The technical and technological features that should be incorporated into the tool.

A total of 13 participants attended the workshop. Excluding EURCAW members, 8 participants from 8 EU Member States were present.

A summary report is now prepared and will be uploaded on the EURCAW websites. We will then have a consultation period for final feedback. The novel welfare inspection tool will be prepared for piloting in 2027.
