Webinar "What is a pig?"

On December 1, EURCAW-Pigs organized the webinar "What is a pig" for National Competent Authorities and state veterinary inspectors. Understanding natural behaviours of pigs was the central topic. Strong innate motivations, deeply rooted in the evolutionary history and biological needs of pigs, drive behaviours essential for fulfilling the pigs’ needs. If needs are not met pigs experience frustration and stress, while fulfilling the needs can result in positive mental states that facilitate positive welfare. Lene Juul Pedersen, Lars Schrader, who were interviewed for the podcast, gave a presentation during the webinar. A third presentation was by Antje Schubbert, also from the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut.

This initiative emerged from contacts with inspectors in the field who described how they would spend many hours travelling to farms for inspections and also expressed a keen interest in both topics of welfare as well as the experiences of other inspectors.
